Ten Tips to Protect Your Company’s Information

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) released guidance for startups, developers, and other businesses about strong data security practices.     Start with Security: A Guide for Business includes ten tips for companies to consider when building their products based on previous FTC enforcement actions. The FTC has authority to bring enforcement actions against businesses that fail to employ reasonable data security practices. While these tips are not binding law, they are meant to clarify what data security practices the FTC considers reasonable. The Commission emphasizes that these tips are foundational, and that data security practices should evolve as new threats emerge.

In addition to guidance, the FTC is hosting conferences aimed at the developer and startup community and featuring experts. The first conference is September 9 in San Francisco, California.
