Apps Alliance Supports Federal Anti-Stalking Legislation

Alliance Teams with Leading Domestic Violence Prevention Group and Consumer Advocates to Encourage Senators to Focus on Criminalizing Abusive Behavior

Washington, D.C. (June 4, 2014) Today the Application Developers Alliance announced its support for federal anti-stalking legislation. The Alliance joined the National Network to End Domestic Violence (NNEDV) and the Family Online Safety Institute (FOSI) in a letter expressing concern that, as written, the Location Privacy Protection Act introduced by Senator Al Franken (D-MN) focuses on technology rather than criminalizing abusive behavior and truly improving victim protections. The groups are committed to drafting a strong federal abuse prevention statute.

“Victims of stalking and domestic violence deserve strong safeguards against further abuse. We thank Senator Franken for taking a step toward federal anti-stalking legislation, but the Location Privacy Protection Act does not go far enough to deter abuse. Federal legislation should criminalize staling behavior rather than focusing on technology,” said Jon Potter, President of the Application Developers Alliance. “We look forward to working with Senators to draft robust, consensus-based anti-stalking legislation.”

The Location Privacy Protection Act is the subject of a Subcommittee hearing today in the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Privacy Technology & the Law.
